Barter Theatre

Barter Theatre has received two loans from the Ninth District Development Financing.  These loans helped our organization handle some capital needs while not requiring us to lay out a large sum of cash.  For a non-profit, this helped us maintain our mission, improve our facilities and look to the future.

The first loan we received in 2003 was for $600,000 and was used for capital expenditures for Barter Stage II and purchasing of the property now known then as the Barter Green and now as Porterfield Square.  This allowed us to complete renovations to our 167 seat thrust stage theatre, complete The Barter Café which serves guests daily, and pave the parking lot for the theatre as well as landscape a large beautiful green space which is the home of the Virginia Highlands Festival and many other events.

Our second loan in 2006 was for $100,000 and was then amended for another $300,000 for a total of $400,000. This money was used for the new Scene Shop, after our shop burned by fire in February 2006.  The shop was doubled in size, and now allows  us to create state-of-the-art sets and provides a safer environment for our production staff.

Chateau Morrisette

The Ninth District Development Financing Fund loan allowed Chateau Morrisette to construct a new water storage system consisting of two storage tanks, booster pumps and water lines leading from the tanks and connecting both of our buildings. The new water system enabled us to increase our water storage capacity and provide potable water for continued operation of our winery, restaurant and related facilities as well as providing water for onsite fire protection.  Meeting insurance standards for fire protection decreased insurance liability and costs and increased the facility’s competitive insurability and security.  As part of the fire suppression system, new fire hydrants were also placed at strategic locations around the facility.  The hydrants afford accessibility for Floyd and Patrick County fire-fighters to hook up as well, providing water for fire protection for area residents.

Westwind West Wind Farm Vineyard & Winery

Financing from NDDF was helpful in securing equipment and constructing our facility at an attractive rate.  We were able to begin producing wine the fall before we opened in May of 2006 and NDDF funding was instrumental to our project.  Since then, our wines have won a number of accolades in a variety of competitions and our business has enjoyed visitors from dozens of foreign countries as well as most every US state.
